The Ten Commandments of Internet Security

Protect your PC

Install antivirus software and keep it up to date at all times. Failure to update antivirus software is the same as not having it.

Use a firewall to filter Internet traffic entering and leaving your computer.

Watch for security updates provided by reliable software manufacturers and apply them in accordance with the instructions supplied.

Protect your information

Don't access, through links, any sites that require you to provide personal, confidential or sensitive information or allow you to carry out banking transactions. Always type in the full address of the site that you want to access.

Never provide confidential or personal data by electronic mail or by any other means, even if the request is made by an apparently legitimate source.

Don’t provide identity information or any other confidential information without confirming that the site you are visiting is secure. Check that the address begins with https:// followed by the respective name of the desired site and that the page shows a padlock in the lower or upper toolbar.

Don’t open electronic mail messages without checking the identity of the sender and the subject. If you have any doubt as to the origin of the message delete it immediately and don’t open any file or attachment it may contain.

Don't be misled

Don’t be misled by actions of others associated with what is known as “social engineering” or “art of misleading”, which use “seduction techniques” to obtain information of personal and/or confidential nature (e.g. passwords, identification numbers such as ID card number or Taxpayer card numbers), to be used illegitimately at a later time.

Use Access Codes judiciously

Don’t pick obvious passwords that can easily be guessed (e.g.: 111111; 123456, password). Memorize them and never give them to third parties.

Define different passwords to access secure sites (e.g. Internet Banking) and sites that don’t require a high level of security.
